Looking Forward in 2009

2009 January 5

Happy New Years! I love this holiday, except for the fact that most stores and restaurants are closed. I don’t celebrate the event with a huge party; in fact, it is usually only a small gathering of friends and family. My celebration of the new year is in taking time to reflect on all the great opportunities I have witnessed in the past twelve months and where I would like to take those opportunities in the next twelve.

It’s been almost a year since Shawn and I first began talking about this website. It started over a conversation at Blarney’s Pub in Dinkytown (Minneapolis). I had my first encounter with New Belgium’s Fat Tire and 1554 that night. At the pub, we wondered how people would discover these great beers if they were used to ordering what they were familiar with. We wanted beer recommendations based on those brews that we had come to love. We wanted to know what other great beers we were missing out on. The plan was to create a system to deliver that information to the beer enthusiasts, the ones who dared to try everything new and interesting. The first step, however, was to learn more about beer itself. From the website grew the idea of a podcast, on which we would be able to review beers while educating ourselves and listeners. Our website went live, after months of planning, in June. Our first podcast episode was recorded in November. Today, Shawn and I are making steady progress in building this website’s identity and expanding our vision for developing an enthusiastic community.

So, what can we look for in 2009? The podcast and website will continue to be our outreach to the community. We couldn’t be more excited about the progress that has been made, and have numerous plans for delivering more content and exploring beer in its entirety.

Thanks to everyone that has been helping and supporting us in the creation of The Beer Genome Project.

Cheers!
