Happy Hour 7: Quilmes Cristal

We recently had a friend of ours return from Argentina. He brought back with him the country’s most popular beer, Quilmes Cristal. In recent years, the Quilmes brewery (Cervecería y maltería Quilmes) has been all but bought out by Anheuser-Busch InBev, purveyor of American light lagers. Joining us on this week’s Happy Hour is @JasonBGP, a welcome addition. The Cristal is an American Adjunct Lager coming in at 4.90% ABV. I didn’t know this beer was available in the states, but I did find traditional 12 oz. bottles in the area – so you should be able to track down a bottle and try it out.

Guys,
Found your site and audiocast while doing some Quilmes googling. Have been down in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a few months now. As a BudLight/CoorsLight drinker back in the States, I have to admit that in terms of “drinkability” or volume drinking, Quilmes Crystal blows both of the others out of the water in my book.
While not quite as cheap as water, a liter of Quilmes Crystal will run you $3.15 Argentine pesos at the supermarket, or about $.82 USD. Not too shabby eh…
On the opposite end of the spectrum, another great beer from down here is the OtroMundo Nute Brown Ale. Would love to get your opinion if you ever get a chance to try it.

Troy,
Thanks for letting us know more about your experiences with Quilmes. We’ve also got a 975 mL of Quilmes Stout, and we are going to have that sometime soon. I really would like to check out the nut brown ale, as they are a favorite brown sub-style of mine.
Cheers!
Shawn
