Mike and Jason: you two were curious how well the three pumpkin ales (Pumking from Southern Tier, Schlafly's Pumpkin ale and DogFish Head's Punkin) compared to one another.

Having the great fortune of trying all three this season, in short succession, I must agree with Jason that DFH Punkin is an imperial brown ale with pumpkin flavor notes. However, the Schlafly and the Pumking are very similar, ringing in at 8% and 9% respectively. Considering they are higher gravity than most other examples of the style, these are two of the three "imperial" pumpkin ales I've ever seen. The other is Shipyard Brewing Company's Pugsley's Signature Smashed Pumpkin. I'll have to hang on to that bomber. Furthermore, if the ST Pumking is still available in Wisconsin, I will get over the border, so you both can try it.
